Tafer Smith is an American artist from New York City that travels extensively with a vast collection of maps from the ancient to the newest digital images. He attempts to integrate unique attributes and aspects of maps, shapes and colors that bridges abstract art with the defined precision of cartography.

His work is multi-media and often collage based with thematic use of geometric shapes most common in the natural world. The works also consider the dwindling knowledge society seems to posses around geography in the digital age.

His works also attempt to shed light on how physical maps which have faded from use can be a window into how people explored and understood their world in the past. Other works consider how order and chaos often work together to explain our surroundings.

As fewer and fewer people use traditional maps, their natural artistry will continue to fade. Tafer's work combining abstract art, digital media, cartography and a host of materials and colors attempt to highlight the beauty and artistry in map making. 

His intention is to enlighten viewers to realize just how far we have come in understanding our physical world and how important beauty of our physical ‘place’.
